American Red Cross - Triangle Chapter

$
In memory of Karl Andrea Besas, the Ninja Challenge was created to remind us to never stop seeking new adventures and to help bring awareness to the importance of water safety. Karl was lost in a tragic drowning accident at Lake Gaston in August 2010. The Triangle Area Red Cross provided support, food, and supplies throughout the five day search and rescue effort. We chose the Red Cross as one of our charity partners to show our thanks and to help them to continue supporting our community.

Triangle Aquatic Center (TAC)
The 501(c)3 not-for-profit Triangle Aquatic Center is a privately held public aquatic facility with a mission to build and operate public aquatic facilities for the health, safety, recreation and competition needs of Triangle citizens and aquatic organizations. Every day about 10 people die from unintentional drowning and drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury death in the United States. TAC is saving thousands of lives each year by teaching water safety, learn to swim lessons and by certifying hundreds of lifeguards every year. We chose the Triangle Aquatic Center as one of our charity partners in order to assist in TAC’s mission of ensuring that fewer friends and families lose loved ones.

USA Swimming’s Make A Splash Local Partner
In 2007, the USA Swimming Foundation launched “Make a Splash” – a national child-focused water safety initiative which aims to provide the opportunity for every child to learn to swim. Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of childhood accidental death and many families in America and in the Triangle do not have the means to ensure that their child learns to swim at a young age. The Triangle Aquatic Center and the Make A Splash Foundation offer free swim lessons to underprivileged children in the Triangle area, children who otherwise would not have the opportunity to learn how to swim – thus placing them at a staggering 88% increased likelihood of falling victim to a drowning accident.
